Review: the princess saves herself in this one by Amanda Lovelace

So, I made a vow at the beginning of last year that I would try to read more poetry. As someone that studied English only as far as A Level, I had not enjoyed the poetry that had been ‘forced’ on me as a teenager and as soon as I left school reading poetry was something I didn’t ever really want to do again. But when everyone started to rave about poetry on book blogs and on booktube, I decided that I really needed to get into it.

One of the best poetry books I’ve read in the last 18 months is by far the princess saves herself in the one by Amanda Lovelace. Three words. Wow. Wow. Wow.

The first thing that grabbed me with the one was the dedication. I am a ridiculously huge Harry Potter fan, there’s no denying that. So let me show you the dedication I found when I first opened this wonderful little poetry book for the first time:

“For the boy who lived. Thank you for inspiring me to be the girl who survived. You may have a lightning bolt but my body is a lightning storm”. – Dedication, the princess saves herself in the one by Amanda Lovelace

I mean, just wow. This spoke to me on so many levels that I could not possibly leave the shop without this book.

the princess saves herself in the one is a collection of four parts: the princess, the damsel, the queen and you. It explores life, love, loss, grief, healing, empowerment and inspiration. All within 156 short pages. This took me on such an emotional rollercoaster that as soon as I had finished the first time, I immediately re-read it. I love how unapologetic and strong Amanda is while telling this story. It is raw, hard-hitting and relatable. It made me catch my breath. It felt like a kick to the gut. And I loved every single word.

you will think your parents are
s h a t t e r p r o o f
until one day you find out
t h e y   a r e n ’ t.
– what it really means to lose your innocence.

This is my favourite quote from the whole book. It was particularly poignant for me at the time due to the fact that I was reading this book in the waiting room of a hospital awaiting news on my father, who was dangerously ill. It shattered me into so many pieces that I spent 20 whole minutes sobbing to myself in the hospital bathroom.

I won’t tell you too much more about it because I want you all to go away and read it. I want you to read it and tell me so that we can gush about it together!

I will say that there was one thing that I was not a fan of with this poetry book, and that was the style in which it was set out. I guess it’s called ‘tumblr spacing’. Now, it was not enough of a con for me to lower my start rating but I know that some people have gotten really frustrated with it.

I absolutely give this book 5/5 stars. If you haven’t already, go buy it now, don’t forget to bring some tissues with you because I have no doubt that you will need them!

Peace and pages

  1. I know so many people make fun of this style but honestly it’s done so powerfully for some of the poems. That spacing is how you’re supposed to say it. She has a new one coming out!! I’m definitely going to read it 😍
